WHY I AM NOT GETTING AUDITIONS I WANT THIS PILOT SEASON!

This was sent by my agent on why ACTORS aren't getting the auditions they want during PILOT SEASON:

2010 Pilot Season – The “NAME” GAME RULES
As Marc Hirschfield recently said in the Hollywood Reporter, “I think this is probably the most competitive pilot season in about eight years ....” (HR, March 9, 2010). There are fundamentally three reasons for this being one of the most competitive pilot seasons on record:

1. Market Competition I: Film Stars Flock to Pilots
2. Market Competition II: Limited Number of Projects
3. Market Competition III: Complications of “Second Positioning” on Pilots

MARKET COMPETITION I:
TOP LEADING MEN/WOMEN OF FILM – TV DOING 2010 PILOTS
The 2010 Pilot Season has been marked by yet another strong paradigm shift in the industry. coming over to Pilot TV in droves.Dustin Hoffman (who hasn’t done TV since 1967) is just one of many FILM stars or film’s leading men/women who have found their way over to Pilots. Here is a non‐comprehensive list of a few who have:

Dustin Hoffman (Luck)
Jon Voight (Midlands)
Forrest Whitaker (Criminal Minds II)
Beau Bridges (Rockford Files)
William Shatner (Shit My Parent’s Say)
Eugene Levy (Hitched)
Mary Steenburgen (Southern Discomfort)
Donnie Wahlberg (Burgess/Green)
Brittany Snow (Kindreds)
Charles Dutton (Uncle Nigel)
Scott Caan (Hawaii Five‐O)
Robert Patrick (Edgar Floats)

Swoosie Kurtz (Mike and Molly)
Bill Pullman (Nathan vs. Nurture)
Ashley Tisdale (Hellcats)
Dermot Mulroney (Rockford Files)
Claire Forlani (Episodes)
Sam Shepard (Tough Trade)
Tom Selleck (Reagan’s Law)
Nick Nolte (Luck)
Virginia Madsen (Scoundrels)
Treat Williams (Boston’s Finest)
Keri Russell (Wilde Kingdom)
Kathy Bates (Kindreds)
Stephen Rea (Chaos)
Janeane Garofalo (John Wells Untitled)
Rob Morrow (Truth)
Jason Biggs (True Love)
Brian Dennehey (Criminal Minds II)
Carey Elwes (Tough Trade)
Lea Thompson (Uncle Nigel)
Gary Cole (Uncle Nigel)
Damon Wayans (Happy Endings)

That coupled with the sheer volume of NAMED TV actors who also are signing up for Pilots increases the competition even further for non‐NAMED actors. Here again is a NON‐COMPREHENSIVE listing of established TV leading men/women who have signed on with Pilots:
Micheal Chiklis (No Ordinary Family)
James Belushi (Defenders)
Leah Remini (Defenders, Takes a Village)
Sarah Chalke (The Freshman)
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)
Blair Underwood (The Event)
Jane Kaczmarark (Who Gets the Parents)
Jerry O’ Connell (Defenders/Rex is not your... )
Debra Messing (Wright vs. Wrong)
John Schneider (Back Nine)
Jimmy Smits (Wilde Kingdom)
Kristin Kreuk (Hitched)
Donald Faison (The Odds)
Michael Imperioli (Detriot 187)
Jeri Ryan (Body of Evidence)
Jean Smart (Hawaii Five‐O)
Skeet Ulrich (Untitled John Wells)
Jay Harrington (Nature vs. Nurture)
Tom Cavanaugh (Edgar Floats)
Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five‐O)
Wayne Knight (No Ordinary Family)
Traylor Howard (Dana Gould Project)
Kurtwood Smith (Hitched)
Nicolette Sheridan (Ant Hines‐Untitled)

Kellie Giddish (Chase)
Laura Prepon (Awkward Situations for Men)
Becki Newton (Love Bites)
Will Arnett (Untitled Mitch Hurwitz)
Jere Burns (Strange Brew)
Christina Applegate (Hall Pass)
Molly Parker (Quinn‐Tuplets)

As an agency, PTG has seen strong positioning of our actors for Series Regular roles. We have had 44 actors go out for Series Regulars in these pilots. That is a very strong showing. However,I have spoken with many of my peer agency owners, and we all have had the same experience this pilot season: we have concluded that most of these auditions are what I call ‘insurance auditions.’ Insurance if the actors who been offered the role do not take the role.

I have pitched to at least 50 CDs this pilot season who all said something along the lines of ‘yes, this client might be right‐on for the role, but the studios/networks are saying STAR NAMES ONLY, and we have an offer out.’ This goes for both my ‘named’ and heavy ‘working actors.’ And for the rest, unfortunately, the days of developmental and semi‐working actors getting a shot at a series regular or recurring role on a pilot are long gone (please see below in market competition II).

MARKET COMPETITION II:
THE CONTINUED DECREASE OF PILOT WORK
Unfortunately, the days of shooting hundreds of pilots are long gone. This paradigm shift occurred due to the WGA strike which allowed studios/networks to restructure how they do business in developing and producing new shows. Shooting a pilot is a very expensive proposition, and now the number of pilots are limited to those which have a great chance of getting a green light or have already been green lit for the fall season. In short,
last year there were 69 pilots and this year 83 (including pilot presentations). This year the market will probably end up at around 65‐70 real pilots shot.

(SIDENOTE: Furthermore, the WGA strike also allowed the studios/networks/cablers to provide for pilots year round instead of the primary pilot season as we had all come to know and expect. The good news is more pilots to come throughout the year;. The bad news is that the exclusivity provisions are no longer in place so named actors can do multiple pilots a year if they so choose, instead of being limited to one during traditional pilot season and thereby opening up roles for other non‐named actors. In short, more competition with Top Named actors!)

Doing the Math: So, if you calculate that there are 70 pilots being shot this year, with an average series regular cast of 5‐7 (some shows are going to as low as 4 series regulars to save costs), we are talking between 350 and 440 ‘job openings’ in Hollywood this pilot season for top roles. Above, I have already listed 85 roles taken, and that was far from an exhaustive list. To complicate things even more, many strong series recurers and established TV actors with heavy credits from TV shows are vying for the 250‐300 roles that are left. For example, everyone formerly on ER has found a pilot. Finally, what I am hearing from CDs is that even named actors and VERY STRONG working actors are doing Guest Stars on these pilots. So again, the days of a developmental or semi‐working actor finding a spot on a Pilot is highly unlikely.

MARKET COMPETITION III: SECOND OPTION POSITIONING
To make matters worse, some actors with current shows are doing pilots as second position. For example, Allyssa Milano, who is currently on Romantically Challenged, has signed on for Hall Pass as a second option. Kyle Bornheimer, also on Romantically Challenged, has signed on for the Bays/Thomas Project. Rob Morrow, of Numbers fame, is currently second positioning on “the Whole Truth.” The entire lead cast of Better off Ted also was confronted with this opportunity. The show, not performing highly in the ratings, found each one of these actors being offered and accepting second options on pilots.

While this has gone on for years in Hollywood, the rise of competition for named actors/actors currently on TV has led many Casting Directors of Pilots to aggressively pursue currently employed actors. Also a few actors such as Jerry O’Connell have been able to do two pilots as exclusivity provisions did not apply. Again, this just shows that there is a strong demand for named actors/actors on TV, and the networks and studios want established names to push for advertising money up front.

(SIDENOTE: Do not forget, the Up‐Fronts, while again having gone through a paradigm shift of their own, are still an imperative positioning place for networks. And network executives obviously feel that TOP NAMED actors will allow them to secure as much Up Front advertising dollars as possible. We are talking billions of advertising dollars committed at these Up‐Fronts and it seems as though NAMED actors are what is selling that ‘Up‐Front’ dollar right now.)

Final Thoughts from James J. Jones*
I send this pilot report to my clients in order for them to fully understand the business nature of this – the 2010 Pilot Season. While the trickle down nature of this pilot season (top named stars getting series regulars, top working actors getting series recurers/guest star, guest stars doing co‐stars, etc) is fairly bleak for developmental and semi‐working actors, it is not permanent. The prospects for scripted television on both cable and networks, as well as the increase in new media and feature film production bode very well for the actor. For my developmental and semi‐working actors, please be realistic about your expectations and focus on your craft and getting me the marketing materials I need to do my job. For my ‘named’ and heavy working actors, please understand the level of competition, and be patient... breakthroughs are undoubtedly coming for what should be a vibrant 2010. In short, hang on – work your craft – and stay positive! Good things will happen!

2009 is a gonna be a good year!

Sorry for not blogging in so long.  Alot has happened:

Well I finally got CAST for "CASTLE" a new show on ABC.  I went on set, it started to rain and we had to postponed the shoot.  Oh well, atleast I got paid for the day.

I just found out I am going to be on YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.  I auditioned for them awhile back, and they got a role for me.  I think I shoot around JANUARY 15th.

I am starting the P90X fitness program.  I have been working out everyday to these series of tapes with my work out gear.  It is kicking my butt!  Let's hope I get fit.   (www.P90x.com)

And I am trying to get IMDB (Internet Movie Database) to put all my credits up.  But for some reason they haven't done so yet.  I have done, GREY'S ANATOMY, LIFE, DOLLHOUSE, CASTLE and none of it is listed on my BIO.  So I have been trying to contact them, but for whatever reason they have no phone number or mailing address.  So it's all thru crappy emails. Ugh....  I guess it could be worse.

I had a great Christmas and New Years.  I was in town working, but having fun.  I spent time with some great friends and got closer to my new puppy (Spike).  I saw MARLEY and ME at the movies and cried my eyes out. UGH!!!!

I will try and be better at updating my life, but I think only 5 people read my blog. Ha ha ha ha.  Thanks!

JOHN

IT ALL WORKED OUT!

Hey Guys!

Looks like it all worked out.  I booked "LIFE" and I start my 3 day shoot Thursday! Yeah!  I just got my script today and I can't wait to read it!  My character plays this guy who collects model airplanes and helps do some "Devious" stuff.  I can't wait.

It looks like the ABC show "CASTLE" still wants me (see previous posting).  They told my people that I am still on HOLD, but it won't shoot until AFTER November 18th.  So it won't conflict with the "LIFE" taping!!!

I am soooo happy it all worked out!  I shot 4 different shows in a 2 1/2 month span.  I hope it keeps getting better and better!

YEAH!

JOHN

I AM PINNED!

So here's the deal with me now.  My people tell me I am on "HOLD" for 2 shows.  They say, "We have a PIN in you."  Which means they have my headshot pinned to the wall in their production office.  You see, whenever production gets ready for a show or movie, they put all the headshots of the people in the project on the wall with a PIN.  So I am PINNED.

So I am PINNED for "LIFE" on NBC.

I am also PINNED for "CASTLE" a new show on ABC.

The crazy part is that BOTH shows are shooting at the same time.  So I am hoping I can do BOTH!!!  'Cause they both seem like great projects to work on!

This happened to me before.  I was PINNED for "24", "The Unit" and "Wedding Bells" a few years ago.  And they were all shooting at the same time.  I ended up only doing "24" because of date conflicts.  I really wanted to do all 3 shows!!!!

But... I am not in the CAST yet for either of these 2 shows.  You see, the script and locations haven't been finalized yet.  So I could be cut out, changed or even re-cast depending on the writers and producers.

All I know is that I have been PINNED.  Ha ha ha ha.  I will keep you guys updated!

SHOOTING and VOTING

OK, so I just finished shooting DOLLHOUSE (FOX's new show).  I had a great time doing it and met alot of nice people.  A few highlights were:

1. My Outfit.  Is this not the craziest thing?!?  If you know me, you know I never, ever, ever dress like this.  Ha ha ha ha, it was great to actually go out of my comfort zone.  Look, it's a yellow golf hat with a hoody and I am wearing a little BLING!  I guess I am really conservative  in what I wear, because I thought this was like an alien suit to me.

Also, the set was this awesome old building with cement floors and old brick walls.  And I was surrounded by dancers and singers.  I got to hang out with Jed Whedon, the writer of the episode.  He also wrote a very cool movie, "Doctor Horrible's Sing A Long" (you should google it, it's awesome).

2.  I VOTED today!!!!  I did an ABSENTEE ballot in the mail.  I don't like standing in lines and parking, so I vote through the mail.  And I voted for my favorite candidates and propositions!  I am so proud of myself.  I want everyone to vote!!!!  I don't care who you're voting for, just get your voices heard!

So I guess that's it for today.  Hope all is well in internet land!

I BOOKED ANOTHER TV SHOW!!!!!

So I booked another show!  Last month I had a blast doing "GRAY'S ANOTOMY", and now I will be doing Joss Whedon's (BUFFY) new Sci-Fi TV show, "DOLLHOUSE".

It stars ELIZA DUSHKU (Buffy, Bring It On, Tru Calling) and it will be on FOX.  I basically am in the midst of POP glamour and I tell Eliza's character and others how to sing and what to do.  I play a musical director getting people ready for a... well that's all I can say about the story.  You will have to see the show.

I start shoot Oct 15 and I can't wait too meet Eliza!

OPRAH

Ok, Ok, Ok.... so I am kinda over my haircut now.  I want to talk about 2 things.

1. OPRAH and VISION BOARDS.  Not sure if any of you guys heard of "Vision Boards", but it's basically a poster you make with everything you want in life. Marriage, love, money, cars, etc..etc.. Then you put it up and look at it everyday.  And the theory is that it will subliminally tr
ain your brain and the universe to get these things.  I have a few friends who do it and love it.  Well I am not one to make posters, but I did make a "VISION DESKTOP" on my computer.  Meaning, I made a Jpeg image and put it on my computer so everyday I stare right at it.  I have MONEY, ECO FRIENDLY CAR, MY DOGS, FRIENDS, PEACE, DREAM HOUSE, FITNESS on it.  Hopefully this will lead me to a POSITIVE Life and send positive people and things to me!!!

2.  This happen to me today: I had this person set up a photoshoot with me for September. She pays me a $50 non-refundable deposit to secure it.  She calls me up later and says, "Oh I need to re-schedule for early October."  So I do it.  Then October rolls around, and she doesn't show up to the appointment.  Later that day, she says, "Oh I thought it was for Sunday, not Saturday."  So I re-schedule AGAIN for Sunday.  Than I get a TEXT Message Sunday morning saying, "I need to re-schedule our appointment, I was at the Hospital all night with my family."

Now I would of normally been sympathetic in this case, but she basically bailed out on her first 2 appointments. So I told her, "Sorry about your situation, but I am booked until the 15th, so when you are "REALLY" ready to do a shoot, call me.  I may request an 'additional' DEPOSIT to secure yet another photoshoot.  (She paid a non-refundable deposit to secure 1 timeslot with me already which she took advantage of)

You see, everytime I schedule an appointment with her and she does a NO SHOW, I lose money and time.  I could of given that timeslot to someone else.  So she basically cost me ALOT money.  She texted me, "You insensitive prick."  Was she not sensitive to me when she cancelled 3 of her appointments with me with no regards of my time or loss of business?  I did say to her that I was sorry for her family, but I can't keep losing money from her.

I said she could re-schedule with me AFTER the 15th, and hopefully she would be more 'serious' about it.  I just get so angry when people don't give respect but expect it.

Just wanted too get this off my chest.

Ugh.

John

MY HAIR!!!!!!

Okay, so I made a HUGE mistake.  I have been going to the best place for 7 years to get my haircut.  It's called, "SHORTY's" in West Hollywood.  They cut my hair and make me look like a  superstar.

But I had an emergency.  I had several auditions and I had less than 24 hour notice.  And my hair was way too long.  So I went to a salon down my street.

It was a place called, "FLOYD's BARBER SHOP".  It looked cool and hip.  So I walked in and showed them my picture (pic below) and I said, "I want this haircut."  I know it can be done, because it was a pic of ME.

So she cut my hair, and 30 mins later, I got a CONE HEAD.  My hair was way too short and had a POINT in the middle.

Needless to say, I was very unhappy with my cut and I hope it didn't effect my auditions the following day. Ugh.

DON'T GO TO "FLOYD's BARBER SHOP"    (http://www.floydsbarbershop.com)  they will screw up your hair!

MAJOR CATCH UP with JOHN!!!

Key Points on my LIFE now:

I just moved!!!  I am in a nice little
Condo in the NOHO arts district.  I love it, because there are only 5 people living in the building! The good thing is, all the people moving in are totally cool.

There are some problems trying to get a few things fixed from the developer, but all in all I love it here.

I just got a new puppy too!  His name is SPIKE and he is a LONG HAIRED DOXIE (Weener Dog).  I got him to keep my beautiful 7 year old DOXIE company.  Her name is KILLER.  (She's
the black dog)  But to my surprise, she HATES him and wants to eat him.  Ha ha ha ha.  I haven't slept in over 2 weeks now!  I am going to crazy!

My poor pup wants to constantly play with KILLER, his new sister.  But everytime he comes near her, she snaps at him.  I was hoping a maternal extinct would kick in with Killer.  But she wasn't having it.  Have you seen Killer's Youtube movie?  Go to YouTube and type in "Ask Killer Anything".  Now that she has a brother, I have to reformat her show.

I shot GREY'S ANATOMY this month!  It was Awesome.  I love this show. It was just a Co-Star role, but it was with one of my favorite actors, Sara Ramerez (Dr.Torres).  I play a psych intern and I make a mistake and she rips me a new one.  I got to hang out with Sara and other cast members and be part of a great show. I loved it!

I am also busy doing my photography.  You can see my work at: www.JBCImages.com .

I need to figure out what I need to do too "Move forward" in my life.  I have a great place, dogs, and business.  But it's kinda at a stand still.  I hate standing still.  I need more money to make more investment ventures.  Like everyone else, I have Student Loans, Car Loans, Credit Card Bills, Mortgage, etc..etc...  I would love to have everything paid off, so the money I do make can go into my retirement. Anyone know any secrets?  (no pyramid schemes or recruiting crap) Did you know I haven't had a vacation in over 8 years?  I am too busy auditioning, shooting, photography and dealing with 'real life'.  I need a vacation so bad.

Okay, now I am just babbling.  Well this is what's going on now in my life.  Till next time!!!!

-John
